About | Mike

Mike Simpson is a writer, photographer and graphic designer from Toronto. He makes music under the artist name 'Mikooshka.' He supplements his artistic endeavors with ESL teaching and especially enjoys leading student groups on his “Heart of Toronto” tours.

In his twenties Mike founded the 'SAF | strongandfree.ca" network of websites and founded a clothing line called 'Sick' which retailed in more than a dozen stores across Greater Toronto and western Canada. To promote the line Mike produced magazines like "High Rollers," and developed grassroots community websites such as "SkateOntario.". Along the way, he refined his eye for graphics and became masterly at designing logos and developing brands.

In 2008 Mike launched his music career under the artist name ‘Mikooshka.’ A variety of promotional tools have been utilized including a demo CD, and My Space/ Facebook pages. Building on a long history of songwriting and band leadership, Mikooshka represents the new incarnation of catchy accessible progressive music. Mike continues to create and record rock music with his brother, Jeff, as the production half of ‘SimpsonMusic.’

Mike has been writing, creatively for the last twenty years. His first craft, started with self-publishing fanzines and interviewing alternative music legends like Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Ian Mackaye (Minor threat / Fugazi) and Sloan, among others. Mike completed a novel in his twenties and wrote a variety of reviews and how-to articles for websites under the “SAF/ strongandfree.ca” umbrella. Recently he has set his sights on travel writing to complement his passion for photography.
